Create a business bank account so you can easily reference cost and income - be aware credit unions may not offer a business checking account. Other business accounts may reward business owners by waiving monthly fees. all you'll need is a tax ID number and a social security number if you're a sole proprietor. allow your business to accept payment by setting up a merchant account. A credit card merchant account is a necessity to accept credit card payment, along with your bank account and a way to process payments.

Online payment systems may be an attractive choice if your business anticipates a large volume of e-commerce transactions. An option like PayPal allows for instant payment through an email address.   CREATE A NEW PayPal for your business (Again, to easily see the incoming and outgoing payments).

Business Name:  if you choose to do business under a name that is not your personal moniker, you'll want to first check your intended business name is not already trademarked by visiting the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's trademark search tool.

The sole proprietorship is the simplest business form under which one can operate a business. The sole proprietorship is not a legal entity. It simply refers to a person who owns the business and is personally responsible for its debts. A sole proprietorship can operate under the name of its owner or it can do business under a fictitious name, such as Nancy's Nail Salon. The fictitious name is simply a trade name--it does not create a legal entity separate from the sole proprietor owner.

The advantages of a sole proprietorship include:

  • Owners can establish a sole proprietorship instantly, easily and inexpensively.
  • Sole proprietorships carry little, if any, ongoing formalities.
  • A sole proprietor need not pay unemployment tax on himself or herself (although he or she must pay unemployment tax on employees).
  • Owners may freely mix business or personal assets.

The disadvantages of a sole proprietorship include:

  • Owners are subject to unlimited personal liability for the debts, losses and liabilities of the business.
  • Owners cannot raise capital by selling an interest in the business.
  • Sole proprietorships rarely survive the death or incapacity of their owners and so do not retain value.

How Much Does an LLC Cost?

When considering how much an LLC costs, be sure to keep in mind that there are two separate kinds of costs to consider. The first is startup costs, and the second is ongoing costs. This page will give ranges of fees based on the time of writing, but please feel free to contact us directly for more specific information.

The bottom-line startup cost of forming an LLC consists of state fees and service fees.

There are different LLC filing fees by state, and fees can change any time – especially when states are looking to raise more money.

In addition to state LLC startup costs, you may also pay fees for the expertise and additional services of a service provider like incorporate.com.

ALL LLC’s must have a unique name that is not currently being used in the State, and must include the initials LLC or L.L.C.  Name availability must be confirmed with the Secretary of State beforehand.
